11 killed,over a dozen hurt in lightning strikes

At least least 11 people died and 16 others were injured from lightning strikes during a thunderstorm in Burdwan and Malda districts on Sunday evening.

At least least 11 people died and 16 others were injured from lightning strikes during a thunderstorm in Burdwan and Malda districts on Sunday evening.

Most of the victims were either working in the field or were on their way home after completing the day’s work. four of the victims belonged to a same family.

The deceased have been identified as Babul Saha (40) and his son Taufique Saha who were fishing at a pond. Tarapada Maji and Biswajit Kindu,residents of Alampur in Katwa,were hit by bolt while they were returning on a bicycle. Supada Santra ,Basudev Santra ,Jhantu Das,Sheikh Mukhsidiha and Sheikh Raya died while they were grazing cows at Shahiganj and Kalari village,said police.

Hailstorm with a wind speed of about 70 km/hr lashed the districts uprooting a number of trees. Many cattles also died in the thunderstorm.

The government has announced to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the families of each of the victim.

District Magistrate of Burdwan Onkar Meena said the incident was unfortunate. He said the rescue and relief operation was on. Those injured have been admitted to various hospitals and undergoing treatment.

The state government has also decided to provide all treatment free of cost to the injured.
