According to the police, Haider Rezza, a student of Class V, was playing in the classroom when a part of its wall collapsed and allegedly fell on his head. He was bleeding profusely from his nose when the school authorities called for an ambulance.

Police said the staff immediately took Haider to Lalbagh government hospital, where doctors declared him ‘dead on arrival’.

Sources said there were around 20 students in the classroom when the collapse occurred. The school, a co-educational institution established in 1997, allegedly operates from a rented building and has eight classrooms. Some parents told the police that the wall that collapsed had been recently constructed to support a false ceiling to divide one floor into two. They alleged they had warned the school that the wall looked “unstable”.

“We have received a complaint against the school. We are looking into the matter,” said a senior official of Murshidabad police station.

Despite repeated attempts made by The Indian Express, the school authorities could not be reached for comment.
Just two months ago, three students of Kolkata Hindu School were seriously injured when a window grill collapsed on them.
