10 killed in multiple road accidents in Kolkata in last 24 hours

At least 10 persons lost their lives due to road accidents in different parts of the state such as Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad and North Dinajpur in the last 24 hours.  A woman was run over by a bus while trying to cross a road at sector 5, Salt Lake, at 5 am on Sunday. The girl, who died on the spot, has been identified as Mamoni Das (25) of Kestopur area, said police sources. The victim was going to her office when she met with the accident, they added.

“It was her first day at her job. As per CCTV footage, at around 8 am, she got down from a bus at Fire Crossing. She was in the middle of the road when the signal turned green, and a bus ran over her,” said an official. The driver is yet to be traced.

Das was taken to a nearby hospital by locals and police officials, where she was declared brought dead. According to sources, Das had recently married Rakesh Prasad against her parents’ wishes, and they had been staying in Kestopur. To support her husband, she had decided to join a BPO.  A similar incident was reported in Ballygunge, where a 45-year-old man was run over by a taxi at around 11.30 am, police said. The injured was taken to Sambhu Nath Pandit Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The taxi driver managed to flee the spot.  In another accident, an auto-rickshaw with a passenger was hit by a sand-laden lorry on the NH-6 near Bagnan in Howrah on Sunday night.

Two persons, including the auto driver, were declared dead, police said. The deceased are yet to be identified. The lorry driver managed to escape the spot.  Similarly, two motorcycle riders were killed after being hit by a speeding dumper at around 7 am on NH-2 in Hooghly. The bodies were taken for postmortem, and efforts are on to identify the deceased, said sources.

Meanwhile, a car heading towards Bihar was hit by a speeding lorry at Altapur in North Dinajpur, and two of its passengers died on the spot. While the deceased are yet to be identified, police said they are residents of Purnia.
Two more persons were killed in a road accident in Murshidabad, when a motorcycle, carrying three persons and heading from Lalbagh to Harihar para, rammed into a tree. All three persons were seriously injured, and were taken to a local hospital, where two were declared brought dead, said police.  No arrests have been made in any of the accident cases till the time of filing this story.
