Ketan Tirodkar,a key accused in the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case, was sent to judicial custody in Sabarmati Central Jail on Thursday where suspended IPS officer D G Vanzara is also lodged. Vanzara had allegedly handed over Sadiq in Mumbai and Tirodkar reportedly played the middleman.
Tirodkar, who was produced before a special CBI court after a six day CBI remand, requested the court to keep him in a secluded place, especially away from Vanzara and other police officials who are suspected to be involved in the encounter case.
There are several top Gujarat Police officials involved in this case and there is a possible threat to my life, said Tirodkar. However, the additional chief judicial magistrate H S Khutwad ignored his request and said that he should request the jail superintendent in this regard.
Tirodkar was arrested by the CBI soon after he appeared before the Gujarat High Court last week Tuesday. The CBI has booked him on the charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal confinement, kidnapping, murder among others.
CBI officials told the court that the accused had not cooperated during the questioning. Tirodkar said that he was ready to be questioned again on remand. Tirodkar didnt hire a lawyer and informed the court that he wanted to file a bail application.
Ketan Tirodkar (46),a journalist, was believed to have developed a good rapport with Mumbais encounter specialist Daya Nayak.
In 2004,Tirodkar claimed in his affidavit filed before the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime (MCOCA) court that he was involved in handing over Sadiq to the Gujarat police, days before Sadiq Jamal was killed in the encounter on January 13,2003.
