Yatra Attacks Cong, says AICC stands for All India Coal Congress

A day after the Gujarat government declared that all crops had failed and sought assistance from the Centre,Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a slew of sops for farmers in wake of drought-like conditions prevailing in the poll-bound state on account of deficient rainfall.

“It has been decided that the interest on the crop loans taken by farmers before August 15 shall be borne by the state-government,which would be around Rs 300 crore,” Modi told reporters on the sidelines of his Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra here. “The government has also decided to give 50 per cent relief in the electricity bills of such farmers,” he said.

Industry sources said the relief offered in electricity bills will cost the state government Rs 500 crore over and above the subsidy of Rs 3,000 crore it is already giving for agriculture power connections.

Modi arrived at Unai in a helicopter and visited Unai Mataji temple from where he started the second phase of the statewide yatra.

Addressing a well-attended gathering,Modi attacked the Gandhi family, saying the Congress’s direction was of “dynasty rule”. “Only one family gets importance… If they make someone Prime Minister,he has to go to the family before taking any decision,” he said.

“Congress’s direction is of nepotism, spreading communalism, divisive politics and not fulfilling promises. We don’t want that in Gujarat.”

Taking a dig at the Congress over alleged coal scam,Modi said the All India Congress Committee (AICC) now stood for “All India Coal Congress”. “You would have heard of theft of diamonds, gold, silver, but have you ever heard that somebody took away coal? Congress has stolen coal worth Rs 2 lakh crore,” he said.

Criticising those who objected to use of Swami Vivekananda’s name for his yatra,Modi said,“Parties used an Osama Bin Laden duplicate during the campaigning in Bihar elections and everybody remained silent. Now,when I am taking out a rally in the name of Vivekananda, what is their problem?”

Meanwhile, the Navsari police rounded over 40 local youth Congress workers when they began marching towards Modi’s public meeting. They were released later.

The yatra will also cover Vansda,Dharampur,Mota Ponda,Sanjan,Vapi, and Pardi and will reach Valsad on Friday evening.
