In the run-up to next year’s Assembly elections, the Women’s wing of Surat city Congress Saturday strengthened its executive body to 71 from the present 60. While many of them were new faces, Rajeshree Chauhan, one of the secretaries of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) women’s wing, has been ‘downsized’ and appointed as its vice-president without consulting her. This has left Chauhan red-faced.
City Women’s wing president Jyoti Sojitra, a Patidar, who took over the post in June this year, selected the candidates. The list was approved by state women’s unit chief Sonal Patel. Of the 71-member body, 17 belong to dominant Patidars, sources said.
The new body consists of 16 vice-presidents, general secretaries (20), secretaries (20) and additional secretaries (15). Apart from this, 29 were made ward presidents of Surat city.
When contacted, Rajeshree Chauhan said, “I was shocked after learning that I have been made vice-president of Surat city Congress Mahila wing.” Sojitra said, “It was done inadvertently, and we have decided to appoint another person.”
