Close on the heels of the decision to reduce the number of seats in MA (English) from 150 to 100 this year,Panjab University (PU) has now decided to bring down the number of seats in MA (History) too, from 68 to 50.

The decision, has however, left students upset. A number of student parties have objected to the decision, asking the authorities to revoke the decision. Last week, representatives of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor (VC) about this. On Monday, members of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) also visited the office of the VC,requesting the authorities to revoke their decision.

Department officials claim that the key idea behind curtailing the number of seats is to ensure better quality of teaching. Offering a total of 150 seats, the department,so far,has been teaching the students in two sections of 75 each.

While the Department of English has got a total of 14 faculty members for teaching 300 students,150 each in MAI and MAII,some of the members cite difficulties in managing what they feel is the high number of students in one class.

When contacted,Dean University Instructions (DUI) BS Brar, said,“The decision has been taken after due consideration of the reasons provided by the respective departments in support of their request for curtailing the seats”.
