E-auction of number plates: Opening day evokes poor response

The opening day of e-auction of fancy registration numbers for the series CH-01-BJ evoked a lukewarm response, with only 0001 number crossing the Rs 1-lakh mark. The number 0001 of the series attracted the highest bid of Rs 1.11 lakh. The bidding process will close on Thursday. CH-01-BJ-0007 emerged as the second favourite number as it attracted a bid of Rs 87,000 against the reserve price of Rs 30,000.

CH-01-BJ-0009 was the third sought-after number among the bidders on the opening day as Rs 56,000 was quoted for it against the reserve price of Rs 30,000. CH-01-BJ-0090 got the bid of Rs 37,000 while CH-01-BJ-0005 attracted a bid of Rs 36,000.

The craze for fancy vehicle registration numbers has witnessed a fall in the city in recent auctions. During the last auction, CH-01-BH went for only Rs 89,000, the second-ever lowest amount. The number 0001 of the series CH-01-BG went for Rs 5.54 lakh while 0001 number of the series CH-01-BF went for only Rs 3.5 lakh. The auction for series CH-01-BE saw number 0001 fetch Rs 4.7 lakh. The number CH-01-BD-0001 fetched Rs 5.10 lakh. The fancy number 0001 in the series CH 01 AP went for Rs 26 lakh. To date, this is the highest amount made by the RLA in Chandigarh from any auction of registration numbers for motor vehicles. The lowest has been Rs 70,000 for 0001 number of CH01 AF series.

The process of e-auction was a 10-day affair, seven days for registration and three days reserved for bidding.

The successful bidders will be required to get their vehicles registered as well as to deposit the balance bid amount within one month from the date of auction, failing which a penalty of 10 per cent as well as interest at the rate of 10 per cent on balance amount would be charged till the date of payment. The result of the auction will be out up on the website and the successful bidders will also be informed through SMS and e-mail.
