A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan after poisoning her two children. Police said the incident was reported from East Delhi’s Shakarpur area on Thursday. Later that evening, the woman’s husband Rahul Thakur and his brother-in-law Rajesh Thakur were arrested after the woman’s brother .

JCP (Eastern range) Sanjay Beniwal said on the basis of a complaint from the woman’s brother, who alleged foul play, a case was registered under sections 498-A (cruelty to wife), 304-B (dowry death) 302 (murder), 306 (abetment of suicide), 506 (threatening) and 34 of the IPC. Police said an SDM inquiry has been initiated into the incident.

Police said the woman has been identified as Neetu Singh. Her two children are Tanik (4) and Riyan (2). The incident came to light around 9 pm on Thursday. Rahul came home from work and stopped to talk to Rajesh, who lived in the first floor of the building with his family.

“He then went up to his house on the second floor. When Neetu did not open the door, he and his brother broke open the door and found Neetu hanging and the children lying on the floor with foam oozing out of their mouths,” an officer said.

They immediately made a PCR call and informed police about the incident. Neetu and the children were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital by police where they were declared brought dead. Police said their bodies were sent for an autopsy. Police has requested that a medical board be set up after which exact cause of death would be ascertained.

Police said the woman wrote a suicide note on the wall in which she said “her husband does not love her any more because of which she is taking the extreme step”.

Neetu’s brother Ashish alleged that Rahul started fighting with Neetu a few months after she found out about his illicit relationship. He also stopped giving money to Neetu. She joined a private company to bear the expenses. She was a strong woman and could not have committed suicide. There is a foul play involved as the handwriting on the wall, which the police think is a suicide note, is not written by Neetu. They killed her.”

Police also recorded the statements of neighbours, who said the couple fought frequently.
