A city court awarded a monthly maintenance of

Rs 5,000 to a woman abandoned by her husband.

The woman had been sitting on dharna at Parliament Street for the last seven years.

Sadhivi Bhagwati,a native of Pithoragarh,Uttarakhand, and mother of three, had filed a complaint at a court in

Pithoragarh against her husband,Krishan Ram,on grounds of domestic violence.

Krishan had not appeared in the court and asked Sadhivi to come to Delhi. In Delhi,Krishan took custody of his eldest daughter and later abandoned his wife and two

children. Sadhivi and her two children had no money to go back to their native place and were left without a shelter in Delhi since 2007.

Her children had taken to begging and were later placed at child care centres. According to the petition filed by Sadhivi for maintenance before the court at Delhi,Krishan works at a biscuit factory and earns Rs 10,000 per month.

Though Krishan failed to appear at the court,Metropolitan Magistrate Navita Kumari awarded Sadhivi,a monthly amount of Rs 3,000 towards maintenance and Rs 2,000 towards rent.

“Since the evidence of the complainant has gone unrebutted and uncontroverted,so I have no reason to disbelieve it,” Magistrate Navita Kumari said.
