A day after an Iranian woman filed a complaint of robbery claiming that she had been assaulted and robbed of Rs 6 lakh-worth of gold jewellery by an auto-rickshaw driver and his associate, police have found that the complaint was bogus.

According to police, investigations have revealed that the woman had forgotten her bag in the washroom of a mall in Vasant Kunj and fearing that her husband would scold her,she made up the robbery story.

On Monday, the Amar Colony police station received a PCR call from the woman who was admitted to Escorts Hospital claiming that she had been attacked and robbed while on her way back from Lajpat Nagar in an auto-rickshaw.

In her statement to police, the woman claimed that she was heading back to her house in Jamia Nagar when she was taken to an unknown location by the auto driver. She also told police that an associate joined him there. The two attacked her and, after she fell unconscious, decamped with the gold jewellery.

Police were scanning her call detail records and location when the woman received a call from the DLF mall in Vasant Kunj informing her that a bag containing her passport and other documents and valuables had been found in a washroom there.

Police then sent a team to the mall to recover the valuables.

Police said the woman tore her own clothes and inflicted injuries on her body to fake the robbery attempt.

DCP (Southeast)

P Karunakaran said,“She was scared that her husband would scold her for losing her valuables and, hence, faked the entire incident. She inflicted the injuries on her body and got herself admitted to Escorts hospital. Following this, she made a PCR call. An inquiry is being conducted into the matter. Action will be taken subsequent to the completion of investigation.”
