A rohini Sessions court has sentenced a woman and her teenaged daughter to life imprisonment for murdering her daughter-in-law after she failed to meet their dowry demand of Rs 1 lakh.
Additional Sessions Judge V K Bansal said the prosecution had proved beyond doubt that the mother-daughter duo had killed the victim by burning her to death. The court also took into account the dying declaration of the victim, which stated that her mother-in-law,Laxmi,and sister-in-law,Jyoti,had set her afire after dousing her with kerosene.
The dying declaration is relevant, trustworthy, unblemished and is not the result of any tutoring or ill-motive. In my opinion, reliance can be placed on the same, particularly because it corroborates with medical evidence, the judge said.
According to the prosecution,Laxmi and Jyoti had set Asha on fire on May 1,2010,after she failed to bring home Rs 1 lakh. The incident occurred when Ashas husband and four children had gone to the doctor. Police said the two used to quarrel with the victim and her husband for money.
