Two-year-old Prabnoor Kaur, the only witness to the murder of her mother and sister, sat in the corner of a room with a chocolate in her hand. She hummed a nursery rhyme as others mourned the death of two members of the family.

A day after Gurpreet Kaur (29) and her daughter Jasmeen (8) were found murdered in the house in Manak Vihar,West Delhi, police said robbery was not the only motive behind the crime.

According to police, the bodies bore deep cuts on the neck, ankle, stomach and wrist — indicating that the intruders came with an intention to kill.

Deputy Commissioner of Police V Renganathan said,“The bodies were sent for post mortem,we have not got the reports yet. It does not seem to be a case of robbery going wrong. Several deep cuts on the wrist, ankle, stomach and neck of the mother and deep cuts on the wrist and neck of the child show that the assailant came with an intention of murder.”

Renganathan said the entry to the house was friendly and the neighbours and relatives are being questioned. Some gold jewellery and Rs 35,000 cash were missing from the house.

The bodies were handed over to the family on Sunday.

At the Manak Vihar home, all present took turns to hug Prabnoor, who was busy playing with the chocolate wrapper in her hand, oblivious to the tragedy.

Kaur’s husband Gurpreet Singh told Newsline that neither did he have any property dispute nor was he involved in any fights.

“I had bought an almirah three days ago. I stay on the first floor,so I had asked the shopkeeper to send some help. My wife told me a day ago that three people from that shop had come and enquired about me. They asked for my details. I have told police everything and hope that the killers are nabbed as soon as possible,” said Singh.

A neighbour said the area is crowded, with houses located close, and it is surprising that no one heard the assailants. “It is the job of an insider because we did not hear any noise,” said the neighbour.

On Saturday evening,a domestic help working at Singh’s cousin’s house had gone to the victims’ house to get saunf.

Sanjeev, the help, said,“I went inside and called out to bhabhi (Kaur),but no one responded. I went ahead and saw the door ajar. I called out again thinking she was sleeping, but when I went inside I saw Jasmeen lying on the bed with the quilt on her face. Bhabhi was on the floor in a pool of blood. I ran downstairs to call sahib. The two-year-old was sitting on the bed crying.”

The room was ransacked and the almirahs were open,he said.
