A 12-year-old boy was battered to death allegedly by a fruit seller, who used a heavy weighing stone to beat the boy for  picking up a mango from his cart. Police said the incident was reported from Northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri area on Thursday night.

According to police, the boy, who was mentally challenged, was wandering around the market area near the bus depot in Seemapuri when he saw the fruit cart.

Police said he stood before the cart for five minutes, picked up a mango and started walking away without paying the fruit seller.

This made the fruit seller angry. He picked up the heaviest weighing stone and battered the child to death. The fruit seller then fled the spot, police said.

“Eyewitnesses said the fruit seller got enraged and started abusing the child. He then picked up the heaviest weighing stone, battered him and fled the spot. Residents rushed the boy to the hospital where he was declared brought dead,” a police officer said.

Police have registered a case of murder and are trying to trace the fruit seller. The boy’s body was sent for an autopsy.

“Doctors said excessive bleeding from the head led to his immediate death. We have informed his parents.  We have also informed local intelligence about the incident and we hope to trace the accused soon. Investigation in the matter is on,” a police officer said.
