Third seed Sachin Kumar was the biggest casuality in the opening round of the boys under-16 singles Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship on Monday. Sachin was upset after he squandered a first-set lead as Vasudev Vijayraman stunned him with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium. Fifth seed Tejas Kapoor was another seed who went down as Sumit Pal Singh sent him packing with a 6-2 6-0 scoreline.
Top seed IB Akshay from Tamil Nadu handed a straight-set thrashing to Parikshit Somani for a 6-0 6-2 win,while second seed Delhi boy Vishnu B Prasad joined him in the second round with a 6-1 6-2 win over Priyavat Mehla. In another match,12th seed Udayan Bhakar had to dig deep before he emerged victorious over Deepak Singh who pushed him to the limit. Udayan came back from a set down to win 6-7(8) 6-3 6-2 win.
Fatehdeep Singh from Punjab came up with an authoritative performance to demolish Shrey Gupta 6-0 6-0,while Delhi boy Garvit Batra caused the other upset of the day. Garvit got the better of Gagan Sharma 6-1 4-6 6-2.
Sixth seed Deepak Vishvakarma had an easy opening set where he did not let Rahul Yadav win a single game but then had to battle hard in the next before advancing into the next round with a 6-0 7-5 win. In the girls under-16,none of the top 10 seeds were scheduled to play on the opening day,with a bye each into the second round.
