Upadhyay in BJP list of probables for Delhi unit chief

BJP leaders believe that a change of guard in Delhi is important for the party rank and file if fresh elections are held in the state.

There is another name in the fray for the post of Delhi BJP chief. Sources in the party said Satish Upadhyay, chairman of the Standing Committee, South Municipal Corporation, is most likely to take over from Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan as the next president of the Delhi BJP unit.

According to sources, the RSS has also cleared his name for the coveted post and the appointment is likely to be announced soon. Once a karyakarta of the RSS, Upadhyay went on to become the Delhi youth wing president in 2002.He was later elected councillor and was given the post of chairman, education committee. After the trifurcation the MCD, Upadhyay became the Standing Committee chairman of the South municipal corporation.

“The name has been finalised in a meeting in which Suresh Soni of the RSS and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, among others, took part,” a source claimed.
But Upadhayay played it safe when his comments were sought. “I am ignorant of any development on this front. However, it is true that party workers have been congratulating me,” he said.

Gadkari had earlier told the party brass that only a “capable” leader should be appointed irrespective of caste. With the Delhi political scene warming up in the wake of pressure being mounted by the AAP and the Congress, the BJP was looking to fill the post as early as possible.
