Two communities clash in Geeta Colony,7 injured

Five persons were rushed to a nearby hospital. Security was stepped up in the area.

A clash between members of the Hindu and Muslim communities at Rani Garden in East Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Thursday night left seven persons injured,police said.

Until midnight,people from the two groups were protesting outside the Geeta Colony police station. Several vehicles,including a police vehicle,were damaged.

Police said the clash began at 9 pm when three boys from one community were playing football at a playground in the locality. Police claimed that the clash broke out after the ball hit a person belonging to the other community,which was holding a meeting at the playground. The three boys were injured in the clash.

Quoting eyewitnesses,police said friends of the injured boys reached the playground and assaulted the men belonging to the other group.

Till late night,hundreds of people were protesting outside the Geeta Colony police station,demanding registration of an FIR.

Joint Commissioner of Police (East) Sanjay Beniwal said the situation was under control. “We did not resort to lathicharge… We will register an FIR and request people not to gather outside the police station…”
