What is the criteria that puts criminals on the wanted list?
Those criminals who continuously commit grave crimes such as robbery with grievous hurt or murder,kidnapping for ransom and other such heinous and sensational crimes in such a manner that their very names inspire terror. These people use their reputation to extort money from members of the public by issuing threats. They also evade arrest,go on crime sprees and arresting them becomes a challenge.
How are rewards decided?
Rewards are declared on a case-to-case basis. It mostly depends on the level of desperation of the criminal and the danger posed by him to potential victims. This includes the number of cases registered against them,and under what sections.
Is there timeframe for apprehending criminals on the wanted list?
Just like there is no time limit for investigation,there cannot be any timeframe for arrest of these criminals. However,it is our endeavour to arrest such criminals at the earliest. For example,Manoj Morkhedi and Neeraj Bawana have been arrested by Delhi Police after months of hide-and-seek and chase across different states.
Are any special teams constituted to apprehend them?
Yes,teams are constituted by district police. These teams are generally led by an ACP or an Inspector under the supervision of DCP and senior officers.
What are the challenges faced during such operations?
These criminals are quite difficult to track as they are continuously on the run across many states. They are also aware of police methodology and take precautions to remain underground and attack unsuspecting targets when they get the opportunity. Sometimes,they cross into neighbouring countries. Tracking them requires patience and persistence. A number of operational difficulties are encountered due to their movement through other states,but they are overcome by putting in dedicated efforts and liaisons with the local police.
