In a major showcase of infrastructure development during an election year, the Congress-led Delhi government has left no stone unturned to ensure that all the roads taken over from BJP-led corporations are not only improved but also upgraded with signages, street lights and drainage.

A total of 647 roads that will be relaid in different parts of the city will have PWD painted on the zebra crossing as a mark of the Public Works Department’s effort and ownership. The project will cost over Rs 1,800 crore.

The roads were handed over to PWD by the corporations last year, after the government claimed that BJP-led local bodies were doing a shoddy job of maintaining the stretches.

“Most of the roads being relaid will be ready before the onset of monsoon,’’ PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said.

According to PWD,most of the roads are located in north, northwest and rural areas of Delhi. The agency plans to spend around Rs 400 crore to repair and relay 100 km of road length in the rural belt. It will include roads from Mangolpuri to Kanjhawala,Kanjhawala Chowk to Auchandi border,Ghevra More to Kanjhawala,Kanjhawala Chowk to Bawana,Bawana to Narela,Narela to Singhu Border,G T Karnal Road to Bawana and Bawana to Auchandi Border.

“In areas where the corporation has not installed street lights,we will do so. Signages, like the kind seen on PWD roads presently, will be put up and these stretches will have proper drainage system and central verges. We are looking at painting PWD across the zebra crossings,’’ Chauhan said.

Officials claim that by painting ‘PWD’,the agency will be staking claim to their roads so that people know which agency to contact in case of problems. But with basic infrastructure, like road, creating an instant connect with the voters, the government seems to be ensuring that they get credit for the ‘smooth roads’,in an election year.

“A total of 647 roads were handed over to us by MCDs and 216 schemes were prepared to improve their condition. Of this,204 schemes have already been sanctioned and work has been awarded for 164. A proper study was conducted by IIT-Roorkee to ascertain what kind of work was needed on each stretch. We are hoping to finish this project before the onset of monsoon. Third-party inspection of all these roads will be done once they are ready,’’ a PWD official said.

Other areas, where work is going on,include Baba Gangnath Marg,Somnath Marg,Vasant Marg in South Delhi; Pusa Road,Pankha Road,Rohtak Road in West Delhi; and roads in Rohini,Inderpuri,Mangolpuri,Najafgarh Road and Nangloi to Najafgarh in outlying areas,PWD officials said.

According to joint secretary of Vasant Vihar RWA Samir Bhagat, road improvement work has been done along Palam Marg,Poorvi Marg and Paschimi Marg. “We have been assured that all the internal roads in our colony will be relaid by April 10. All the roads strengthened recently had been in a bad condition for a while, but this kind of work on such a large scale is usually seen only in an election year,” Bhagat said.
