South Delhi police now has the task of guarding one of their own police stations. The old Vasant Vihar police station near the Munirka petrol pump — which currently houses case properties of the motor vehicle accident and theft cases — is being haunted by drug addicts and thieves over the last several months, police said.

So much so that the police have now posted two men on a 24-hour duty to guard the parking lot. This is despite the fact that the police station has boundary walls and fences on all sides. In December, police noticed that all that remained of an old Maruti van, which had been lying in the lot for the last several years, was its seat. The thieves had slowly and meticulously taken away all the parts of the car.

According to police, there has been several thefts of case property from the parking lot. “The senior officer have been informed about the issue. We have been asked to step up patrolling on the station premises. The parts of motorcycles and cars are sold as scrap while the wheels and other parts are sold in the second-hand market. We got lucky on Monday and managed to arrest one ,” said a police officer.

On Monday, constable Mukesh Chand who was on duty at the police station spotted a man in his mid 20s,fleeing the police station premises by climbing over the wall, police said. “Chand asked the man to stop but when he did not,he chased him for about hundred metres and arrested him. The man was holding one of the wheels of a Maruti van which was a case property. A few tools and two master keys to open the cars were also recovered from the man,” a police officer said.

“The man wa later identified as Ismail. He is a resident of the nearby Bandu Camp slums. Ismail gave us the names of two of his associates who used to come and steal auto parts from the police station parking lot. We are now on the lookout for Fakruddin who is a drug peddler operating in the Rangpuri Hills area and has been stealing auto parts from here,” said the officer.

Ismail has been booked and a hunt is on for his two associates who had stolen several auto parts from the police station and sold them as scrap.
