Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj began campaigning for the BJP in Delhi on Monday. Her campaign revolved around a parallel critique of the Congress government, both in Delhi and the Centre. She insisted that people shouldn’t squander their vote by choosing AAP.

“By voting for AAP,you’ll be wasting your vote. After the declaration of assets,it turned out that they aren’t aam aadmi after all. They should change their name to Amir Aadmi Party,” she said while campaigning for Vijender Gupta,BJP’s candidate from from New Delhi constituency.

“Even Anna Hazare has criticised Kejriwal. He has said that if he had to go vote for them,he wouldn’t and choose the none-of-the-above option instead,” she said.

Gupta is up against incumbent Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who won by 14,000 votes in 2008. In response to AAP’s allegation that BJP had fielded a lightweight candidate against the CM,Sushma said Gupta was one of the party’s “strongest candidates”.

Sushma took on Sheila in her constituency and said Delhi had become the ‘rape capital’ of India. “Sheila Dikshit has asked the women of Delhi to stay indoors after dark. What she doesn’t realise is people don’t go out after midnight to work voluntarily. They do it out of necessity, they do it because the inflation is so high that middle-class and lower-middle class families need the money. She has done nothing to protect them,” she said.

Vijender Gupta spoke about the prevailing water crisis in the constituency. But the rally itself was sparsely attended with most people leaving the park in Gole Market soon after Swaraj ended her speech.

After the rally in Gole Market,Sushma Swaraj went to RK Puram to campaign for BJP candidate Anil Sharma, who’s up against incumbent Congress MLA and Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Singh.

Sushma began her campaign with a workers’ meeting in Kasturba Nagar and battled her way through rush-hour traffic to reach Malviya Nagar to campaign for BJP candidate and former mayor Arti Mehra.

While welcoming Swaraj,Mehra criticised the Congress government for failing to provide “internal and external security”.

“A small country like Pakistan decapitated our soldiers and sent their heads to us. In Delhi,a horrific incident like the December 16 gangrape took place, and similar incidents continue (to take place). The Congress has failed to protect its people,” she said.

Sushma also spoke about how Sheila Dikshit had campaigned against her government in the run up to the 1998 assembly election, using high prices of onions as a weapon. “She wore onion garlands and now the same onions will take her down. This is divine justice,” she said.
