A student died on Wednesday after he was run over by a Haryana Roadways bus on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road.

Police said Abhimanyu (17),a first-year student of Industrial Training Institute (ITI),Gurgaon, was run over by the bus while he was trying to board it near Mahavir Chowk,Sector-14.

“He crossed the road at the chowk and ran, along with

his friends,to board the bus to his institute,” DCP (West) S P Singh said.

According to police, the driver,Praveen, accelerated just as Abhimanyu was trying to board the bus. As a result, the boy tripped and came under the rear wheels.

The incident led to protests by students of the institute and those from nearby colleges. Buses were vandalised, their windowpanes broken and tires deflated, police said.

Residents of Sector-14 claimed that there was a lot of reckless driving in the area.

“A similar incident took place two weeks ago, when a student was mowed down by another Haryana Roadways bus. Traffic police must crackdown on these errant drivers and challan them,” Simran,a passerby who witnessed the accident, said.

Police said Abhimanyu was taken to the Civil hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

His parents had been informed of the accident.

“His parents were inconsolable. They are migrants from Bihar and were living in rented accommodation in Narsinghpur. They moved to Gurgaon a few years ago looking to earn a living and had to work two shifts so that they could send Abhimanyu to college,” Prashant,a friend of Abhimanyu, said.

“The driver has been arrested for negligent driving,” Singh said.

Two students,Yogesh (19) and Kamal (19) have also been held for vandalising the buses,Singh said.
