The Mayor of the South Municipal Corporation has reportedly demanded an MP bungalow as her official residence. According to sources,Mayor Savita Gupta has said that in the absence of an official residence for the Mayor,an MP bungalow in the Lutyens’ Delhi should be allotted to her.

The civic administration is now busy persuading the Ministry of the Urban Development to assign an MP bungalow to Gupta. “At the insistence of the Mayor, the Municipal Commissioner has written to the Ministry of Urban Development to identify an MP bungalow and allot it to her. The Commissioner and the Additional Commissioner have met the Joint Secretary of the ministry more than thrice to discuss the issue,” an official told Newsline.

The erstwhile unified MCD had a designated Mayor’s bungalow in Timarpur. However,post-trifurcation,the bungalow, which falls in North Delhi, has been assigned to the Mayor of the North Corporation. The Mayors of the South and East corporations are yet to be allotted an official bungalow.

Commissioner Manish Gupta confirmed that the administration has requested for an MP bungalow for the Mayor. “The administration has requested the Ministry of Urban Development for an MP bungalow. The government bungalow for MPs can be allotted to them or to an equivalent dignitary. We are awaiting a response from the ministry officials,”he said.

However, sources said the UD ministry was not keen on catering to the request.

“The officials at the ministry have not shown much keenness in the matter. The talks have been going on for over four weeks now. The officials have not denied the request nor have they approved it,”another official said.

Meanwhile,Gupta, upset over the delay in allocating her an official residence, said she will not accept a government residence even if her request comes through.

“The Delhi Municipal Corporation Act states that the Mayor should get an official residence. But it has been over two months since the three corporations came into being. The Central government has turned a blind eye to our request. Now,even if they concede my request,I am not going to accept the bungalow,”said Savita Gupta, who stays at her own residence in Lajpat Nagar.

Prospects of the East corporation Mayor getting an official residence also look bleak. The administration is now looking at taking a bungalow on lease.

“To hire a property for government purpose,PWD has to fix the rental fee. We have inspected properties at Vigyan Vihar and Yamuna Vihar. But none of the landlords are ready to give it on rent as the PWD has fixed a rental fee based on per sqm, inclusive of house tax,” said an East Delhi civic official.
