Snatchers target South African family,take passports,valuables

Motorcycle-borne men on Tuesday allegedly snatched valuables from a South African family and fled.

Motorcycle-borne men on Tuesday allegedly snatched valuables from a South African family and fled. The incident was reported from Barakhamba Road area,which currently has tight security due to the BRICS summit. In spite of there being policemen deployed at every 500 metres in the area,the assailants were able to flee. The incident was reported around 8 pm on Tuesday night.

Along with cash,debit and credit cards and a BlackBerry phone,the men also snatched the passports of the family members,police said.

Chockalingam Moodley,a resident of Durban,had come to India on vacation with his family. In his complaint to police,he said he was out for a walk with his wife and two relatives near Bengali Market,when the incident occurred.

He said he was walking ahead with his relatives and his wife was walking behind him,when he heard a scream. He turned around to see his wife involved in a scuffle with some men on a motorcycle. He said the men snatched all her belongings and fled.

“We have registered a case of criminal force,assault and theft at the police station concerned,” a senior police officer said.
