The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police arrested a 36-year-old man on the charge of murdering a monkey showman after he reportedly stopped the man from giving liquor to the monkeys.
The incident took place in the New Delhi railway station area on August 15,police said.
The monkey showman,Irfan,was found unconscious and bleeding from the head. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Blood-stained brick pieces were recovered from near where Irfan was found unconscious,police said.
Post-mortem examination of the body revealed that Irfan had died of head injuries. A team was formed to ascertain the identity of the man,which at that point was unknown. Shopkeepers and residents in the area revealed that a man was seen roaming in the area with two monkeys. After he was identified,it was also found that one Ram Babu,who used to frequent the parcel office area of the railway station,was also missing since the time of incident. Raids were conducted and Ram Babu was arrested, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
During questioning,Ram Babu disclosed a strange sequence of events that shocked police. He said on August 14,he was loitering outside the parcel area in search of alcohol. Meanwhile,Ifran also arrived there with his monkeys. Both of them together bought alcohol and began drinking. After both of them got drunk,Ram Babu tried making the two monkeys with Irfan also drink the alcohol. When Irfan objected to this,Ram Babu picked up a brick and smashed Irfans head. When Irfan fell unconscious,Babu fled, Yadav said.
Police said Ram Babu had been previously involved in another case of murder.
