The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a stay on the elections of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA),which were due to be held on Friday. The DHCBA,the Delhi Bar Council, and a lawyer who waned to stand for the elections have been mired in litigation for the last several weeks, with multiple suits filed in the High Court and Supreme Court after DHCBA had changed the criteria for eligibility of candidates.

The Supreme Court constituted a committee of three senior advocates to draw up a fresh list of lawyers eligible to vote in the DHCBA elections on the basis of the ‘One Bar,one vote’ principle, which states that if a lawyer votes in one Bar election in the current year,he is disqualified from voting in any other Bar association poll in the same year. The High Court was directed to dispose of the cases filed by the Bar Association,Bar Council and lawyer.
