A week after a 25-year-old girl was raped and murdered in North-West Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy area, Delhi police on Saturday arrested the absconding co-accused 20-year-old Abhimanyu alias Mannu. The police had earlier arrested a juvenile in this case who had revealed Abhimanyu’s involvement.
The police arrested the accused near the Mukundpur Bridge near Bhalswa Dairy based on the information of Abhimanyu’s visit to his relatives on Saturday.
“Around 5 pm a youth resembling the accused — Abhimanyu — was apprehended. During interrogation he disclosed his identity and admitted his involvement in the crime,” said Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of police (North West).
Police said a team had gone to Abhimanyu’s ancestral house in Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh and conducted several raids in his village and quizzed his relatives. A team was also deputed near his in-laws’ house from where the information regarding his whereabouts eventually came.
On November 28, Abhimanyu and the juvenile had, under the influence of Alcohol, broken into the house of the victim. “They got her unconscious and sexually assaulted her. The victim later regained consciousness and resisted the assault, but they strangled her to death,” said the DCP.
Police said the duo took the victim’s body to a forest near Bhalswa Dairy. There they sexually assaulted the corpse before dumping it in the forest.
