Ramnath Goenka Awards: Celebrating the Best in Journalism

The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, held on Wednesday, applauded fearless reporting and exceptional writing.

Good journalism will always be heard, and on Wednesday it spoke the loudest at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards. The Chief Guest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presented awards to 37 journalists from across the country, in print, broadcast and digital media. If Kamal Mahal at ITC Maurya was bathed in the soft yellow glow of incandescent light, the hall was lit with politicians across parties, corporate leaders, experts in the fields of medicine and law, authors and senior journalists.

In the audience were Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad; HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar; Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore; Congress leader Shashi Tharoor; CPI’s D Raja; JD (U) MP K C Tyagi; Chairman, National Green Tribunal Justice Swatanter Kumar; Union Minister of Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan; former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi; BJP MP Poonam Mahajan; lyricist and ad-guru Prasoon Joshi; veteran journalist Madhu Trehan and Dr Naresh Trehan; Shaina NC, BJP; former Attorney-General of India Soli Sorabjee; PP Chaudhary, MoS, Law and Justice, and Electronics and Information Technology; Ajay Mittal, Information & Broadcasting secretary; Shobhana Bhartia, Chairperson and Editorial Director of the Hindustan Times Group and Onkar Kanwar, Chairman, Apollo Tyres Ltd, among others.

The evening saluted the rigour of reporting and incisive opinion, and won the applause of leaders across party lines. The award categories covered investigative, political and sports journalism, feature writing, sports and entertainment, commentary and work in regional languages. Critiques on Environmental Reporting, Uncovering India Invisible, Investigative Reporting, and Interpretative writing were also lauded for their work.
This annual event has been on the country’s media calendar since 2005, instituted by the Ramnath Goenka Foundation to celebrate the legacy of the founder of The Indian Express Group.
