Delhi University’s Executive Council (EC) on Wednesday finalised the deletion of A K Ramanujan’ essay ‘Three Hundred Ramayanas’ from the University syllabus, and ratified the Academic Council (AC) resolution removing the text from the reading list for BA Honours students.

Of the 23 members in the EC,only one member dissented when the resolution was placed before the council for approval.

The resolution was put before the EC after the minutes of the October 9 meeting of the AC,removing the essay from the syllabus on the grounds that it was objectionable, were approved by AC members at a meeting on Tuesday.

The EC on Wednesday took a decision to give non-teaching staff at University colleges representation in college governing bodies. One such member will now attend governing body meetings as special invitee with no voting powers. “It is a welcome step, though they should be allowed full membership,” said Rajib Ray,one of the two elected members of the EC,who was also the lone dissenting voice when the AC resolution on Ramanujan’s essay was placed before the Council.

The EC also passed a proposal hiking the annual subscription fee of the Students Union from Rs 5 to Rs 20. “The hike was necessary as at the present rate, the Union, which services 50 colleges, works on Rs 3.6 lakh a year, which is not enough to meet even the running costs of the office,” said Dr P C Jain, principal of SRCC college and staff advisor to the Union.
