The Transport department has shortlisted three companies for operating auto fleets, similar to radio taxis in the city. These companies are expected to operate autorickshaws that will ply in the National Capital Region,in a bid to end harassment by auto drivers who either overcharge when commuters want to go to Gurgaon and Noida or refuse to ferry passengers.

In the beginning,2,000 such autorickshaws will ply in fleets of 500 each. “While Quick Cabs Private Limited has asked for two licences, which will entitle them to run two fleets of 500 each, other companies such as Smart Community Service Pvt Ltd and Trinity Movers Pvt Ltd have opted for one licence each, which will mean that each company will run a fleet of 500 autos,” a senior Transport official said.

A court hearing into Delhi government’s scheme to provide auto fleets to companies to operate is going on,but the government wants it to be advanced. “The next date of hearing in this matter is in early September but since we want to start operating these fleets soon,we are seeking an earlier date for hearing in this matter so that the issue is sorted out soon,” the official said.

These autorickshaws will ply in NCR in accordance with Reciprocal Common Transport Agreement among the governments of Delhi,Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The Delhi government,in its budget session, had announced a scheme under which around 1,000 autorickshaws, operating in groups of 250,were to be given to companies that employed only women drivers. Besides this,7,000 other autorickshaws in groups of 500 were to be given to corporates to streamline autorickshaw services in Delhi. All 8,000 autorickshaws will be allowed to ply across NCR.

“The court has issued a stay in this matter. We had got 15 applications,of which we have already shortlisted three,” an official said.

The applicant must have control rooms with radio communication to manage its fleet by using GPS devices. The applicant must be a company registered under The Companies Act,1956 or a society under The Society Registration Act,1860. “Experience of three years in the transport business, preferably in operating in motor cabs,is a must,” an official said.
