Police have claimed to have arrested the leader of a gang of thieves, who was convicted in three previous cases but was out on bail, and two of his associates.
The fourth member of the gang that operated in South Delhi, and recently burgled a house in Mehrauli, was still at large. Silver and gold jewellery, and electronic equipment were recovered for them, police said.
Police said they were looking for the gang following a complaint from Naresh Kumar, who had alleged that thieves broke into his house in Chhatarpur when he was away in Uttar Pradesh. He reported the incident at Mehrauli police station.
Since Idrish (23) of Shastri Park was the first suspect because of his history, police claimed they trailed him and finally succeeded in arresting the three men on June 11.
They would roam in an autorickshaw to identify a target. After that, they would return to the house at night, and break in by breaking the locks or iron grills on windows, DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said.
Then they would take the loot to a secluded place and divide it among themselves. Idrish would normally take the lions share, the DCP said.
Police claimed that the gang was involved in eight other cases of thefts.
