A one-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father’s employee, who was babysitting her at her home, in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas Monday. The toddler was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, and is said to be stable. The 21-year-old accused was arrested within three hours. He was produced before a Delhi court on Tuesday, which sent him to 14-day judicial custody.
Additional DCP (south) Chinmoy Biswal said the accused has been identified as Santosh Rai, a security guard in Shahpur Jat. “The arrest was made on Monday evening after the girl’s parents approached police,” he said.
The girl’s father said he met Santosh almost two years ago when they used to work at a placement agency. The girl’s father started his own agency six months ago, and offered Santosh a job. Around a month ago, he asked him to look after his daughter as he was on the morning shift and his wife works as a domestic help. A senior police officer said, “For the last two weeks, the girl’s parents had been leaving her with the accused when they would go to work. Santosh used to stay with the family and would not take any money to look after the child.”
Police said the incident came to light when the girl’s mother returned home around 2.40 pm on Monday and found the child crying and bleeding from her private parts. She questioned the accused and then shut him in a room before calling her husband.
“Her husband made a PCR call at 3.20 pm. Police reached the house and the girl was taken to hospital, where medical examination confirmed rape,” the officer said. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Following the rape, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal protested outside Union Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence, demanding security for women and children, and the constitution of a high-level committee. She also called for death penalty for those found guilty of raping a child.
Maliwal was later detained by police. “The amount of effort Rajnath Singh (ji) is taking to silence me, had he used that to create a system then Delhi would be free of rape. I don’t know what should I do to make myself heard,” said Maliwal, who also went to see the girl at the hospital. “She was raped so brutally that the walls and floor of the house had blood all over,” she claimed.
Meanwhile, in two separate incidents, a nine-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour in Punjabi Bagh and a five-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour in Rohini.
