Offee Lalmingahualpuia of Mizoram wrote her name in history books as she became the first girl player to score a hat-trick in the Subroto Cup football tournament that is being played at the Ambedkar stadium.
Her triple strike helped Government Mizo High School,Aizwal,Mizoram thrash Our Lady of Rosary High School,Goa 3-0 in the opening Group I encounter of the Under-17 category in the 53rd edition of the tournament.
Girls’ competition at the all-India level was introduced for the first time in the Subroto Cup football tournament this year and received a lot of entries from the country.
Lalmingahualpuia scored in the ninth,17th and 42nd minute as the Mizoram team completely dominated over their opponents from Goa.
“It feels good that I helped my team win,it is added bonus that I will have my name in the record books. I hope it inspires others from my school to work hard and achieve accolades in sports at this level. There is immense talent among girls. We are glad that Subroto Cup has finally given us this opportunity to showcase our talent and we are keen to make the most of this opportunity,” Lalmingahualpuia said after the match.
The idea to launch a full-fledged girls event was being discussed for sometime but there were apprehensions about the response it may generate and other finer details as their accommodation and changing rooms at the stadium.
In Group I encounter,Baroda High School,Gujarat rode on Simran Ahluwalia’s 17th minute strike to beat Air Force School,New Delhi 1-0. In the Group II league encounter,Ahlcon Public School,Mayur Vihar,Delhi played out a goal-less draw with Sri Ramkrishna Saratha Higher Secondary School,Salem,Tamil Nadu after the stipulated 50 minutes.
