In the last few days, nearly 400 persons have been detained by Delhi Police on charges of teasing or harassing women near the Ramlila Grounds. The detentions were a part of the Delhi Police’s ‘operation shishtachar’. The operation is aimed at nabbing men who ogle at women, misbehave with them or make them feel uncomfortable in other ways, said the police.

Policewomen, dressed in plainclothes, spot such men and take them to the nearest police station. The men are then informed about the provisions under IPC which deal with offences such as passing lewd remarks and teasing women.

The men are also “taught” how unethical such behaviour is, said senior police officials.

“We have intensified police deployment at the Ramlila Grounds. We want to ensure that the festival season goes off smoothly and woman visitors don’t face incidents of teasing etc,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central, Paramaditya.

Other arrangements at the venue include deployment of three companies of police personnel and forces from reserve police, installation of CCTV cameras and scanners, keeping ambulances and fire engines on stand-by and setting up of a mobile police booth with wireless connectivity. Police have also been told to look out for lone or lost children to prevent cases of kidnapping.
