The North Municipal Corporation has proposed to cover an open sewer drain in Ramesh Nagar and use the covered space to create a parking lot.
The plan was on the lines of South corporations decision to cover a similar drain in Saket.
North corporations works committee chairman Ravinder Gupta said the agency has earmarked an estimated Rs 107 crore fro the proposed project to cover the drain running between Ramesh Nagar and Kirti Nagar.
Work is expected to begin in the coming months. People have been complaining about the foul smell emanating from the drain and the toxic gases which are serious health hazards. Other than covering the drain,we will get it regularly cleaned, Gupta said.
Gupta said he inspected the site on August 10. There were unauthorised shops of scrapdealers along the drain. Corporation land has been encroached upon. I ordered eviction of these scrapdealers. This land, along with the covered drain, could make for a good parking lot, he said.
The markets and residents in the area will get a 3-km parking space once the project is completed.
This will take care of the demand for parking space. We thought that rather than allotting new parking sites,we should utilise the available space, Gupta said.
Earlier, the South corporation has decided to cover the Nauroji Nagar drain running from Africa Avenue Marg to Ring Road for providing parking space under a JNNURM scheme.
The corporation has also decided to cover the sewer running between Saket District Centre and Saket Court. Councillors said it would be a lucrative project for the corporation because money from the parking lot would augment its income.
