Delhi residents can now avail the first copy of birth and death certificates from hospitals under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) free of cost.
A direction issued by the NDMC states that all hospitals in its areas will now issue the first copy of birth certificate free of cost before the mother is discharged.
In case of death, NDMC chairperson Jalaj Shrivastava said the certificate will be given to the nearest relative at the time of handing over the body.
“Earlier, people had to go to the NDMC for the first copy, but now it will be given by the hospital and additional copies of birth and death certificates, if required, can be obtained from the civic agency after depositing a fee,” he said.
The facility for providing such certificates was first launched by the Delhi government at Lok Nayak Hospital last week.
The NDMC, sources said, is the first organisation to implement the scheme in all hospitals under its jurisdiction, NDMC medical officer P K Sharma said.
The facility will be provided with immediate effect in hospitals like AIIMS, Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia, Palika Maternity, Charak Palika and Lady Hardinge, which come under the jurisdiction of the NDMC.
Each hospital will appoint a sub-registrar to sign the certificates, Shrivastava said.
A workshop in this connection was conducted on Saturday by the NDMC. The hospitals were told to be careful while issuing the free copy as there is a legal liability attached with them. MCD hospitals already have the provision.
