A three-year-old boy was mowed to death by an Audi in Northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area on Wednesday night.
Locals held protests outside the residence of the vehicle owner, though his driver was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the incident, said the police.
According to the police, Sanjeev (24), was driving through a narrow lane in Outram Cluster, at about 11.30 pm on Wednesday, when the incident took place.
“Sanjeev was driving to his employer’s home. Children were playing in the narrow lanes of the cluster. A three-year-old boy, Raunak, who was playing near his father’s vegetable cart, darted forward just as Sanjeev’s car was passing by. Though Sanjeev applied the breaks immediately, the boy was run over,” said a police officer.
Raunak’s father Neeraj pulled his son out from under the car and rushed him to Sushruta Trauma Centre on a neighbour’s two-wheeler, but the boy was declared brought dead, police said.
“A case of rash and negligent driving and negligence causing death has been registered. The Audi has been impounded and Sanjeev has been arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Northwest, Vijay Singh.
“He was sent for a medical examination to ascertain whether he was drunk, though prima facie it appears to be a case of rash and negligent driving. He was sent to judicial custody,” said Singh.
Angry locals held a protest after the incident outside the residence of the Audi’s owner, a businessman who lives barely 80 meters from the accident spot.
Police had to intervene to get the crowd under control.
Locals held another protest on Thursday evening as well. Senior police officers were sent to the spot to placate the angry protesters.
