The BJP on Saturday strongly objected to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s attack on Narendra Modi’s marital status during a public rally and termed Rahul’s offensive on the issue as a “immaturity and desperation”.

“Indian politics has an unstated code of conduct. Ordinarily, we don’t drag families and ladies into controversy. Rahul is guilty of breaching that code,” senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said in a signed article posted on his website. “Devoid of serious political issues and understanding of those issues, Rahul has reflected his immaturity and desperation by making the ‘Modi marriage’ as a political issue.”

Jaitley, in fact, cautioned the Congress leadership to refrain from making “Modi marriage” an electoral issue, virtually issuing a veiled threat reminding that several Congressmen could even be singled out for “illicit” relationships.
