In separate incidents in South Delhi on Thursday, two MCD engineers were brutally assaulted when they tried to check unauthorised and substandard construction.

While one was struck with an iron rod in Malviya Nagar, another was knocked down and kicked by a group of men in the Palam area.

The two attacks come days after Ansar Alam,an executive engineer with the MCD,was assaulted as he waited at a bus stop near Rajghat.

His assailants were suspected to have links with the “builder mafia” in the MCD central zone, where Alam had recently stalled unauthorised construction.

On Thursday,Narendra Malik,a junior engineer with the Building department, was attacked by a mob in Palam where he had gone to collect conversion charges and carry out sealing of buildings.

“This area is a hotbed of unauthorised construction. I have been there several times to collect conversion charges. I was surveying the area when a group of men attacked me,” Malik said.

“They hit me in the stomach and I fell. But they continued to kick me. One of them picked up a brick to hit me but the assistant engineer stopped him. They didn’t realise that he too was an MCD official. Had they known, they would have attacked him as well. Assuming that people were coming to my aid, they fled,” he said.

Malik has injuries in the stomach, arms and ears.

He suspects that the men who assaulted him belong to a political party.

“The people who were hitting me seemed to be workers of a political party. They were bragging about their political connections,” he said.

In Malviya Nagar, assistant engineer S H Mujtaba was hit with an iron rod by a contractor. “I was supervising work at the site. I found that the contractor was using substandard material. He had been warned earlier to use better quality material. But he refused. When I asked him to stop work,he hit me with an iron rod,” Mujtaba said. He was rushed to the

AIIMS Trauma Centre.

The contractor’s family,on the other hand, alleged that there was a scuffle over demands for money.

In both cases,FIRs have been registered.

DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said: “A case of assault on a public servant on duty has been registered. The contractor and the engineer got into

a scuffle. We are investigating. No arrest has been made

so far.”
