A 30-year-old man threw his wife off the second floor of their building and smothered his two-year-old daughter to death before surrendering to police. The incident was reported from Central Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar on Saturday around 11.30 pm.

According to police, Ajit Kumar, who works in the sales department of a hotel in Noida, reportedly came home drunk on Saturday night and had an altercation with his wife, Shalini (27).

Angry over her raising her voice, he pushed her off the balcony of their second-floor apartment in Kewal Nagar. He then smothered his daughter, Vanshika, to death as she was crying. He carried her body down and laid it next to her mother’s. Police said Kumar then made a PCR call and told them about what he had done.

According to police, Kumar was screaming over the phone. He told them that he wanted to surrender. A team of officers reached the spot and arrested him. Shalini and Vanshika were rushed to hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

Police said the bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination and their families informed. Based on a complaint filed by Shalini’s father, Mahesh Kumar, a retired Indian Airlines officer, a case of murder has been registered.

During questioning, Kumar allegedly blamed his in-laws for trouble in his marital life.

Police said the couple had got married in 2010 and their relationship soured soon after. Their daughter was born in November 2011.

Kumar reportedly filed for divorce in 2011 and started living separately. According to police, the court then called them for a counselling session and asked them to work on their marriage. The couple then started living together but used to fight and argue constantly, police said.

On Saturday night, Kumar came home drunk and picked a fight with Shalini. When she started to argue, he lost his cool and pushed her off the balcony and then killed his daughter. Shalini’s father also told police that Kumar used to harass Shalini for dowry and often physically abused her. Following this, sections of domestic violence were also added to the FIR and Kumar’s brothers and mother were also arrested.
