Seven personnel posted at Neb Sarai police station in South Delhi were suspended after residents complained about their alleged involvement in an illicit liquor racket in the area.
Residents approached police after Vijender (38) died after consuming the liquor. The liquor was being sold in a house opposite an MCD school in the area by a woman and her son. They had been running the racket in the area for the last few years and the police personnel reportedly knew about it, a police source said.
The suspended personnel are Sub Inspector Vijay Kasana,SI Pankaj,Head Constable Vijender,HC Vijay,Constables Sandeep,Mukesh and Mahesh.
The man who died,Vijender,reportedly began feeling giddy after consuming the liquor and was admitted to hospital. His blood pressure reportedly shot up before his death. Doctors did not tell us the cause of death,but some residents of the area told us that he died after consuming illicit liquor. He was last seen buying liquor from the shop, a resident said
A raid at the liquor godown was conducted and 25 cartons containing over 1,271 bottles were recovered from their possession. The two,who had allegedly been selling illicit liquor,have been identified as Swarna and Sonu. Police said they had arrested another associate,Sonia,and that her arrest led to the recovery of 1,332 more bottles of illicit liquor.
Residents alleged that they had informed area SHO about the racket,but no one took action. This liquor hub is a nuisance in the area. It not only makes the area unsafe as many anti-social elements come here to buy liquor,many locals have fallen sick after consumption. Many people sit near the school,consume liquor and pick up fights, a resident alleged.
Police said the accused procured the liquor from Haryana.
