A 73-year-old woman was found murdered inside her house in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar Tuesday morning.
Police said the victim’s 50-year-old son Kuldeep Gulie, who lives on the third floor of the three-storey house in Savitri Nagar, was the first person to spot her body and alert police. The woman, Chandramukhi Singh, lived on the ground floor.

“Kuldeep told police that he found the main door of his mother’s floor ajar when he came downstairs early in the morning. When no one responded to his knocks on the door, he went inside the house and saw his mother’s body lying on the floor, near the kitchen. He told police that her hands were tied with a piece of cloth and her face covered with another,” said a police officer familiar with the details of the case.

Joint Commissioner of Police (southeastern range) Praveer Ranjan told The Indian Express that they have registered a case of murder and started an investigation.

“As per our preliminary investigation, it appears to be a case of robbery. There is, however, no sign of forced entry. We are investigating the case from all possible angles,” he said.

Even though police suspect that the woman was smothered or strangled by the attackers, the cause of death can only be ascertained after the autopsy, police said, adding that the post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday since the victim’s other children — two sons who live in the US and a daughter who lives in Canada — are yet to reach the capital.

Police said they have collected CCTV footage from the locality to ascertain the movements of people near her house. Police have also picked up the woman’s domestic help for questioning.

“The house has been ransacked. It seems like the attacker took a lot of time to search the house,” said a relative, who did not wish to be named.
