Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of Mana Ram, the traffic constable who was run over by a car after an argument with its driver in West Delhi on Saturday.
The L-G’s office has offered to help Ram’s family by giving a family member a job. Ram is survived by his wife, a two-year-old son and his father. Both of Ram’s sisters are unmarried and the family was banking on Ram’s income to run the household.
On Tuesday, Arvind Kejriwal had sent a request to the L-G’s office seeking an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore to be given to Ram’s family.
Meanwhile, a special investigating team, comprising inspectors from the Crime Branch, the Traffic Unit and the Moti Nagar police station, has been constituted to investigate the murder.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander told Newsline that Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who had visited the Police Headquarters on Monday, had expressed a wish to offer condolences to Ram’s family over the phone. Police personnel, along with Rajnath Singh, had observed a two-minute of silence in memory of the slain constable.
