A jail van caught fire while ferrying inmates from the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to the juvenile home in Kingsway Camp. Police said in an attempt to escape, the juveniles had caused the minor fire.
The incident was reported around 4 pm,when the van was near Vidhan Sabha. Near Vidhan Sabha,a scuffle broke out between seven of 12 juveniles in the van, said a senior police officer investigating the case.
Police said the interior of the van was set ablaze soon after the scuffle broke out.
Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire immediately doused. No one was injured in the incident.
In the commotion, however, the juveniles tried pushing the police personnel and in an attempt to escape, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sindhu Pillai. All 12 were immediately overpowered and taken to the Civil Lines police station. The matter is being investigated. Prima facie,it appears that the juveniles were trying to escape, he said.
Police are probing how the juveniles triggered the fire. Police said since the juveniles began pushing the constables as soon as the fire broke out,it seemed to be an attempt to escape. They acted immediately and began assaulting the personnel, said an officer.
A senior police officer said,If any portion of the van is damaged,we will register a case since the van is government property.
