A JNU PhD scholar was arrested from south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area Wednesday afternoon for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman after promising marriage. He was later sent to 14 days’ judicial custody by a Delhi court.

Police said the accused is pursuing PhD in European Studies in JNU. “The complainant said she has known the man since 2008. They got into a relationship and later, he allegedly promised to marry her,” police said.

She claimed the accused recently broke up with her and used to call her to his room in Brahmaputra Hostel in JNU where he raped her many times, police said. “The girl later found he had been cheating on her and then approached the police. A case was registered at Vasant Kunj (north) police station, leading to his arrest,” the officer added. ENS
