A day after students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office asking that action be taken against students allegedly responsible for instigating a fight on Mahishasur Day, JNU administration has instituted a three-member committee to look into the issue.

“A three member committee, headed by the Chief Proctor, will be examining the entire situation. The committee is expected to come out with its report within two weeks,” JNU Vice-Chancellor Sudhir Sopory said.

Last week, different student groups had came to blows on the campus over the topic of Mahishasur, whose slaying by Goddess Durga is celebrated as Dussehra.

The All India Backward Students’ Forum (AIBSF) had allegedly distributed pamphlets that  had “objectionable pictures” and text about the festival.

This led to a fight between members of the two student groups with AIBSF blaming ABVP for the ruckus and vice versa.
