Delhi is facing “a very serious water crisis” because of Jat protests in Haryana and water is to be strictly rationed in the city, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday. Only a handful of VIPs and essential services will be exempt.

“Barring (the) president, prime minister, Chief Justice of India, defence installations, hospitals (and) fire brigade, water (is) to be equally rationed amongst all,” Kejriwal told the media.

He said he too would be covered by the water restrictions that he warned could last at least one or two days even if the water supply was to resume on Sunday.

The Munak Canal in Haryana, which supplies water to large parts of Delhi, has been shut down after it was vandalized by a section of Jats demanding job reservations.

Kejriwal said he had spoken to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the need to restore water supply to Delhi at the earliest.

“I requested them to please send the army (to Munak canal). They may be trying.”

“But even if the water supply is restored now, it will take 24 hours to reach the water treatment plants in Delhi.”

He urged residents of Delhi to “please save water”, saying they might have to depend on the stored water for one or two days at least.

He added that water would be supplied through tankers to areas in Delhi hit by water scarcity.

Because of the water crisis, all schools in the national capital would be shut on Monday.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia added: “No water available now. Still no hope to get it.”

Both Sisodia and Kejriwal said that if nothing was done immediately, “water supply in Delhi will face an unmanageable crisis”.

“Delhi facing an unprecedented water crisis,” Kejriwal added.

Aam Aadmi Party legislator and former Delhi minister Somnath Bharti added: “Receiving panic calls from residents (over) no water supply. Request (Rajnath Singh) to intervene and get Munak canal normalized.”

Delhi’s Water Minister Kapil Mishra had said earlier that seven water treatment plants had been shut in the city, and water supply would be hit, including in areas covered by the New Delhi Municipal Council, the civic body that covers the VIP heart of the capital.

Really sad to see comments. It shows how much the country is divided. The new fault lines of the country is people are now literally divided on political lines. Whether you approve or disapprove of a particular party, ensure that your support is issue based and not a blanket support.

Don't understand what Modi, Rajnath Singh n NDA doing. See the CEO Kejriwal has given a statement, NDA has to do something and solve problem of Delhiwallas. Kejriwal has a busy schedule, he can only give comments and media statements. He cannot do work. He also has commitments with Bollywood to give reviews. Then he has to coordinate changing all local hospital name boards to Mohalla hospitals to show people he opened a Mohalla hospital in every nukad. Just change the label and board and here it becomes a new hospital.

So all that this moron was doing was distributing freebees and had no plans to solve Delhis problems. Dont we know all these reservation agitations wether in Gujrat or Haryana or Rajasthan are being instigated by Congress. Let his friend from Uttarakhand start sending water tanks atleast this much they can do to help his friend who is backing Rahul in all his anti national activities

Kejriwal you are the CM. It's you who have to do. Why not your smart ministers create water from thin air. Your problem is you can't blame Jats as it will go against your politics. The only safe route is blame BJP and Modi. But Jatley's defamation case scares you. Another safe way is ask your voters stop bathing and drink Pepsi. See you have so many wonderful options.

Delhi is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna. Has Yamuna become so polluted that Delhi is nearly fully dependent on canal water from Haryana. This canal water is from Western Yamuna Canal which originates from Yamuna at Tajewala just down stream of Paonta Sahib. It means that the main river in its around 150 km course from Paonta Sahib to Delhi becomes so heavily polluted that in Delhi its water is undrinkable.''

This Chief Executive of the State has been poking in the issues of "OTHER"States and Parties and to abuse the P.M of India all the time he has been in Power.Never did he thought of the real problems of the people of Delhi who voted for him.His Govt.could have searched other options to provide water and electricity as an added source to the supplies from Haryana.Apart from his politics of confrontation he has been inciting people in BJP ruled states to agitate for reservation etc

Wow, I never thought that you outsiders are this much jealous with Delhi's Freebies. It is not our fault that you elected Khatar govt and are dealing to Jat Arakshna . You Haryana people made a foolish decision and should face it yourself. Our CM is this much Good and Pro-active that he beforehand analysed the situation and raised all alarms. And regarding water, It is not Haryana's water, it is nature's water and even in Wars between countries, water supply is never affected. Stupid.

Is these protestors fathers created the canal for supplying water to Delhi? And how can the government allow these protesting ways to teach lessons? Same protestors houses need to be run without water for few days? The punishment to be meted out like that? Irrespective of all their protests which make others suffer, they do not want to be punished and compensation to be given to people who died. Wah, Wah, great.

Kejri had enough time to blame Narendra Modi govt and issues of all over the nation. He had no time to think to find options for Delhi water crisis. For pollution also he woke up after red alert only. Kejri is a kind of acenntric man ever I have seen.

This Vedic astrology writer’s predictions for India in 2016 in article “ 2016 – a woeful year for India with slight cheer at the end” were published on 18 January 2016 in online magazine thesop. The text related to the news report reads like this : “ February and March 2016 seem to be grim for a variety of concerns. Power dams and electricity seem to be in focus for certain serious problems including rising prices during February to August 2016. Among others, Delhi could perhaps take a hint for precautions”. Here when it is said power dams and electricity , water is implied and automatically included because power dams and electricity are not generated without water.
