A masters course in mathematics has been approved by the Academic Council of Jamia Millia Islamia,under the meta-university project.
The two-year Masters in Mathematics Education will include teaching and pedagogy of mathematics as taught in classrooms. A total of 20 students will be admitted in the first year of the course,on the basis of an entrance test. The dates for the test will be announced soon.
The course aims to make the teaching of mathematics more interesting and application oriented, Jamia registrar S M Sajid said.
Techniques like mathematical modeling,which can be used to predict the flow of traffic or the rate of growth of population,will also be a part of programme.
The course will take off this month, Sajid said.
In May,Jamia had approved Public Health as a subject in meta-university. The two-semester,post-graduate diploma course is scheduled to begin in the 2012-13 session. It is expected to be converted to a masters programme in the following session.
Sources said the course will be inter-disciplinary,with Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies and economics,sociology and social works departments contributing to it.
The meta-university project is a collaborative venture of DU,Jamia,IIT-Delhi and JNU. The project will allow students to mix and match course modules.
