Israel’s National Security Advisor Yaakov Amidror called on Home Minister P Chidambaram on Monday reportedly to discuss the progress in the investigations related to last month’s bomb attack in which a diplomat of the Israel Embassy in Delhi was injured.

The two held discussions for about 45 minutes. Neither side disclosed what transpired at the meeting.

It is understood, though, that Chidambaram apprised the Israelis about the status of investigations into the case. The Delhi Police has arrested a noted journalist,Mohammed Ahmad Kazmi, apparently on charges of providing logistical support to the bombers.

Sources in the police said there could be an official statement on Tuesday regarding the charges framed against Kazmi.

The two persons, including a West Delhi resident, who were questioned for allegedly providing the bike used in commission of crime had not been given a clean chit till late Monday evening, sources said.

Kazmi’s family, meanwhile, called for a candle-light march at the India Gate on Monday to protest his arrest. The march was attended by several journalists, civil rights activists, politicians and religious leaders.

“My husband is innocent, and I request that he be respectfully released,” said Jahanara,Kazmi’s wife. Her sons — Turab and Shuazab — also participated in the march.

Among the politicians who joined the march were Independent Rajya Sabha MP Mohammed Adeeb (Uttar Pradesh) and CPI’s Rajya Sabha Syed Azeez Pasha (Andhra Pradesh). Also present was Congress MLA from Mustafabad,Hasan Ahmed.

“Kazmi was a nationalist. We request the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi to ensure that no innocent man is punished,” Ahmed said.

Syed Yahya Bukhari, brother of Jama Masjid Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari, said: “The gathering here today is proof that Kazmi is innocent. This is only a token protest.”

Senior journalist Saeed Naqvi said the arrest was a matter of press freedom and that the movement for Kazmi’s release was becoming bigger. He said the

20-day remand that Kazmi is under was “excessive”.
