Tells court that he was beaten for an hour after he complained of ill health; case registered.

A case has been registered against a Tihar Jail official following an inmate’s complaint that he was assaulted by the official when he reported sick.

Police sources said the prisoner complained about the assault on October 16 when he was produced in court for a hearing and bruises were noticed on his body.

“The magistrate asked the prisoner how he sustained injuries on his body inside the jail. The prisoner was initially reluctant, but opened up after some prodding. He said he was taken to a room and beaten for hours by an official when he complained of ill health,” an officer said.

In his statement to police, the prisoner lodged in room number 117 of jail number 3 said he first went to the head warden and told him about his ill health.

“I was very weak and had fainted twice. I was afraid that I am suffering from some major illness. The warden advised me to approach a higher official and seek medical help. In the meantime, the warden spoke about my heath to a higher official, who summoned me to a room,” he told police.

The prisoner said the jail official assaulted him for over an hour in the room and threatened to kill him. “Everybody inside the jail is afraid of him. He abused me and beat me from 8 pm to 9 pm. He told me that all he had to do was just make a few changes in the case papers to make my life miserable,” he alleged. Following the allegations, the magistrate asked the jail superintendent to bring the CCTV footage on the day of the incident to the court.

A case under Sections 323 (causing hurt),341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC has been registered against the accused. An inquiry has been ordered,a police source said.
